Skin Test Instructions

Many medications used for allergy and asthma symptoms interfere with skin testing. These medications may need to be omitted before testing. Never stop prescribed medications without first checking with the prescribing physician.

The following drugs should be omitted for at least:

ONE-TWO WEEKS: Antidepressants that may interfere with testing:
Adapin (Doxepin) Elavil (Amitripyline)
Adafranil (Clomipramine) Endep (Amitriptyline)
Asendin (Amoxapine) Etrafon (Amitriptyline)
Aventyl Hydrochloride (Nortriptyline) Limitrol (Amitriptyline)
Norpramine (Desipramine) Serzone Remeron
Trazadone (Desyrel) Maprotiline
Antipsychotics: Mellaril Anti-anxiety: Xanax

Call our office to find out the length of time to omit the following medications:

ONE WEEK:
Antihistamines: Allegra, Zyrtec, Vistaril, Meclizine (Antivert), Hydroxyzine (Atarax), Periactin, Clarinex

THREE DAYS:
Perscription Antihistamines: Azelastine (Astelin nasal spray), Bropheniramine (Brofed, Lodrane, Anaplex, Biohist LA), Chlorpheniramine (Dallergy, Tussi-12), Durahist, Durahist PE, Promethazine HCL (Phenergan)

TWO-THREE DAYS:
Over the counter antihistamines and decongestants such as listed below and other medications containing antihistamines: Diphenhydramine (Benadryl, Tylenol sinus, Tylenol PM), Chlorpheniramine (Chloro-trimenton), Brompheniramine (Dimetapp, Triaminic), Pseudoephedrine, Sudafed, Claritin (Loratidine)
Over the counter nasal sprays: Afrin, Dristan
H2 Blockers: Cimetidine (Tagamet), Famotidine (Pepcid AC, Mylanta AR)
Anti-ulcer: Nizatidine (Axid), Rantidine (Zantac)

12 HOURS:
Leukotriene Receptor Antagonists: Singulair, Accolate, Zyflo

12 HOURS if possible:
Short acting Bronchodilators: Alupent, Albuterol (Ventolin, Proventil), Maxair, Terbutaline (Brethine), Primatine Mist

Omit all oils, lotions, and creams from the arms and back the day of testing. It is not necessary to omit deodorant before testing. It is best to refrain from sun tanning or tanning beds for 1 week prior to testing.
Please eat a well-balanced meal before your appointment. Please wear loose, comfortable clothing for your visit. Women should wear a two-piece outfit if possible.
Safe allergy testing requires varying amounts of time. Most patients are allergy tested on their first visit. Therefore, plan to spend either all morning or all afternoon when you report for skin testing. IF YOU ORDINARILY BRING SMALL CHILDREN WITH YOU ON DOCTORS VISITS, IT IS ADVISABLE TO MAKE ARRANGEMENTS WITH A SITTER FOR YOU TESTING APPOINTMENT.
